Description
This delightful Périgord country manoir with its colombage beamed walls and
steep tiled roof is very typical of the traditional architecture in the Double
area of the Dordogne. It is situated peacefully on a hillside overlooking the
Isle Valley with breathtaking views over the countryside and a sunny aspect all
day.
The house is 2 km from the village of St Laurent des Hommes, which has all
essential shops, and half way between some of the great vineyards of South West
France; Bergerac, Monbazillac, St Emilion and Bordeaux and, the famous
prehistoric caves of Lascaux and Les Eyzies. Bergerac is 25 km from here,
Bordeaux 45 minutes.
Accommodation
The house is furnished with all modern comforts and warmly decorated with a zest
and individuality that blends well with the charm and character of the old tiled
floors and ancient beams.
The kitchen is fully equipped and includes a dishwasher, a large fridge with an
ice maker, a double oven and also has a washing machine and dryer. The dining
room leads from the kitchen. The salon has the original fireplace, television,
DVD and video and is wonderfully cool and restful in summer.
The ground floor has two double bedrooms, the larger one has a fireplace, and a
bathroom with a bath, washbasin and WC. Upstairs are two attic bedrooms, one
double, the other a twin, and there is also a bathroom.
The Pigeonnier is separate from the house and ideal for those who prefer a
little privacy and independence. It has a large double bedroom with exposed
beams, a corner kitchen suitable for making breakfast and light lunches and a
bathroom with shower.
The barn has been turned into a games room and has a gymnasium area, a pool
table, table football and darts. The pool (16m x 8m) is terraced, surrounded by
a wall and gated. The main part of the pool has a depth of 2.40 metres with a
shallow area for children. The garden has quiet, shady spots, garden furniture
and a pergola, there is a boules pitch and table tennis and the covered terrace
is particularly welcoming on hot days, and has a large barbecue.
Activities
There are tennis courts 2 km from here, which are reserved for one hour every
day specifically for our guests, (included in the price). There are three good
golf courses within a short drive at Lalande, Périgueux and at Château des
Vigiers, which also has an excellent restaurant. Riding is a wonderful way to
discover the countryside around here and the riding stables 2 km away, organise
accompanied treks for all levels of expertise. There are also several lakes and
spots along the river with good fishing.
Périgueux cathedral designed by the architect of Sacre Coeur in Paris, is a
beautiful backdrop to the weekly Wednesday morning markets and the town has some
excellent food shops. Bergerac has a Saturday morning market and if there's a
chance, Sarlat, with its twisting narrow streets, medieval and Renaissance
houses, is pleasant to walk around and worth a visit. Most villages have markets
on different days of the week and there are numerous restaurants to try, ranging
from country to gastronomic, with generous, reasonably priced menus.
