Traditionally
built of honey coloured stone and full of charm, the houses are entirely
separate from one another. Each house is surrounded by about a hectare of land
and has a private swimming pool. La Chapelle is close to the old village of
Montignac and the lovely Vézère Valley, a short drive from the prehistoric caves
around Les Eyzies. The cave at Font de Gaume for instance, is a long gallery
with side passages that have amazing paintings of reindeer, mammoths, rhinoceros
and a wolf, and magic symbols like those at the extraordinary Lascaux caves
further down the valley. The village has essential shops, St Gesnies and St
Amand de Coly, a 5 minutes drive from here, also have shops and there is a
market every evening with fresh farm produce.
The Houses: All the houses are comfortably furnished and well equipped.
The kitchens have an oven and hob, a fridge with a freezer compartment,
dishwasher and various appliances including a toaster. They each have two
satellite televisions, DVD and video, hi-fi, a telephone in every bedroom and a
washing machine and dryer. They may also be taken together as a group.
La Bastide: has a kitchen and dining room, a large living room and a
laundry room on the ground floor. There are also two double bedrooms with en
suite bathrooms with a bath/shower and separate WC. Upstairs is a sitting room
area on the landing, four further double bedrooms and three bathrooms with
shower. There is a 10 x 5m heated swimming pool and La Bastide can accommodate
up to 12 people.
Les Lauzes: has an open plan living room/dining room with a kitchen on
the ground floor and two double bedrooms, both with private bathrooms with a
bath/shower that are suitable for wheelchair users. Upstairs are two other
double bedrooms with en suite shower rooms and a living room with sofa beds if
needed, which opening straight onto the swimming pool. The pool is heated and
measures 10 x 5 metres. The house has an inner courtyard and sleeps 8/10 people.
La Grangette: has a living room/dining room and kitchen on the ground
floor, and a double bedroom and bathroom with bath. There is also a laundry
room. Upstairs is a sitting room area on the landing and two double bedrooms
with shower and WC. The house sleeps up to 6 people and has an 8 x 4 metre
swimming pool. You can walk for miles almost anywhere you like, often without
meeting a soul. There are tennis courts about a km from here and two riding
stables 5 and 8 km's away.
Activities: Near the village of Thonac, 5 kms from Montignac and worth a
stop if you find yourself going that way is the Château de Losse, usually open
to visitors between July and mid September, which sits in a delightful spot
above the Vézère river and has some splendid views. The other three sides of the
château are surrounded by deep moats and the fortified entrance is 14th century.
The 'L' shaped living quarters in the inner courtyard are Renaissance and the
rooms are furnished with 16th century furniture and tapestries. Sarlat is 15
km's in the other direction, a town with a lovely medieval centre, squares with
café terraces and a choice of restaurants, a popular Saturday morning market and
a succession of music and theatre events throughout the summer.
