History
The first fortified castle was built between 1030 and 1050 by Foulques Nerra,
Count of Anjou in order to protect his property. Edouard François Colbert, Grand
Colbert's younger brother, Minister of Louis XIV, founded the Maulévrier branch.
He was at the origin of the expansion of the textile industry in Cholet which
became the capital of the handkerchief. Jean Nicolas Stofflet worked for the
Colbert as a gamekeeper during the Vendean uprising. he was named generalissimo
in the Great Catholic Army of the West. In 1815, Edouard Victurnien Colbert
undertook the reconstruction of the Castle which lasted until 1830. In July
1977, the castle was bought by a company , transformed into a restaurant and in
1989, the hotel opened. Between the Loire Valley and the coast of Vendée, you
will find prestige lounges decorated with refinement and pleasure gardens
adorned with statues, ponds and shaded walk. You will also enjoy the Oriental
Park which is a rich arboretum full of Asian souvenirs, planned by a famous
Parisian Architect of the beginning of the century, Alexandre Marcel.
